Operator of the Peppol network

The Peppol network is not owned by any corporation. It is an international infrastructure whose critical routing services are operated directly by the European Commission, ensuring maximum independence and security. Technical standards and provider certification are overseen by the non-profit association OpenPeppol. As a user, you are therefore not tied to a single private company – you use a standard backed by governments and the EU that will remain with us for decades.

Global directory – operated by the European Commission

The SML (Service Metadata Locator) is the technical ‘brain’ of the network and works like a global DNS record. The European Commission (through the CEF initiative) ensures that this service is neutral, stable, and available to all entities in the EU. Because the SML is operated by an EU institution, no single commercial company can take control of the network. This guarantees long-term stability.

Certification – managed by OpenPeppol

OpenPeppol is a non-profit organisation based in Belgium that acts as the ‘rule keeper’. It defines technical specifications (BIS – Business Interoperability Specifications) so that a Czech accounting system can communicate with a German or Italian one. It also ensures that all Access Point providers comply with security and technical standards.

Physical data transmission – provided by certified partners

The part users interact with when sending e-invoices and other documents is managed by certified Access Point partners.
